Landfill Waste-Body Investigation & Stability Assessment
Background
Settlement of a long-operating landfill had largely stabilized. A systematic geological investigation was needed to characterize internal state, leachate levels, drainage performance, gas yield and slope stability.
Challenge
The investigation had to be performed without disrupting ongoing operations, requiring non-destructive or minimally invasive techniques to detect drainage blockages, stratigraphic anomalies, and slope-stability risks within an aging waste body.
Solution
Multi-method approach: monitoring wells with ultrasonic level loggers, geophysical surveys, pump-out tests with gas monitoring, and numerical slope-stability simulation — yielding an integrated, multi-technique evaluation framework.
Results
Identified multiple blocked or failed drainage segments and guided targeted repair
Produced refined stratigraphic and compaction distribution maps
Quantified landfill-gas generation rate to support utilization or treatment decisions
Delivered the technical baseline for closure design and leachate-system retrofit
